Do you believe in God? An episode of ABC’s hit television show “Black-ish” touched on the subject of religion, and the dynamic between believers and non-believers in our society. There’s absolutely no denying that religion divides more people in this world than any other topic known to man. But the one aspect of the religious conversation that may be the most isolating, is believing that there is no higher power.
An atheist is defined as someone who does not believe in God, and atheism is something continuing to grow among our younger generations. The number of those identifying as Atheists continues to grow, the biggest question is why? And the answer depends on who you ask?
As touched on during the “Black-ish” episode, religion was extremely important to blacks, as it was taught that a higher power, God, was protecting them, and belief and faith through enduring of their struggles, would lead them to Heaven. Now, African-American communities are looking at that belief as a joke, as the portrayal of Jesus, the son of God, as a white man, and this white man being the vessel of a message for the promise of everlasting life in exchange for faith while enduring the struggles of this physical world. Being that these slaves were brought to America, the question is constantly asked, was Jesus, God, and Heaven, always the belief among these people, or was this something forced onto them by a European culture that enslaved and imprisoned them?
Atheists often point to lack of proof as a reason for separation from organized religion. Whether you read the Bible, the Quran, the Tanakh, or any other religious material, many Atheists will point to the lack of historical reference, or proof that the events documented in these literary works actually occurred. There has always been a debate as to whether these books are works of fiction, or are they based on true events. When people look for proof, it often starts at the beginning; creation. Was there a Big Bang? Did God create the heavens and the earth? Was man an evolution of apes, or were Adam & Eve the first inhabitants of our planet? I don’t think any of these questions can be answered by a man alive that can be verified with factual evidence.
With so many questions, and even fewer answers, there is one commonality between all people. We all believe in something, even if that something is nothing. There are so many things in this world that cannot be explained. So many people question who God can exist when our society is so so evil, so wicked, so disparaging. How can God allow these things? With so many questions, and even fewer answers, there is one commonality between all people. We all believe in something, even if that something is nothing.
